This week's microfiction is a 100-word story about a tragedy.
Many of my micro stories are inspired by prompts provided by THE FICTION DEALER Substack. I highly recommend checking it out if you’re interested in reading more microfics — or writing your own!
Quicksand
Everyone called it a tragedy, an accident, a horrible mistake. How Tommy and I took the dare from Olivia, prettiest girl in school, to sneak into the silo. How we ignored years of warnings from our parents against fooling around with grain. How Tommy lost his balance as he posed for a picture. A terrible tragedy, awful for his parents and awful for me, the survivor who tried to get help for his friend.
Olivia cries every time she sees me. One day, she’ll stop crying.
Olivia was too good for Tommy.
A tragedy, they called it.
I knew better.
Writing without a paywall is important to me, but writing is work. If you enjoyed this post or found it helpful, I would be honored if you would consider donating.
