This week's microfiction is a 100-word story about a bad marriage.

Many of my micro stories are inspired by prompts provided by THE FICTION DEALER Substack. I highly recommend checking it out if you’re interested in reading more microfics — or writing your own!

Chipped

The coffee mug reads “WORLD’S BEST MOM” in cheery lettering surrounded by a circle of flowers. Its chipped rim is a testimony to some past mishandling, but a mutilated object can still be of use. Steaming coffee fills the mug, which sits on a round kitchen table adorned with a yellow tablecloth.

Fresh red spots fleck the cloth.

Sunlight pierces the window above the sink, highlighting the woman sprawled on the floor. Blood pours from her nose. One eye is swelling shut.

A man stands above the woman, fists clenched, absolute in his cruelty.

The chipped mug sits and waits.

Writing without a paywall is important to me, but writing is work. If you enjoyed this post or found it helpful, I would be honored if you would consider donating.
