This week's microfiction is a 100-word story about Southern summers and days gone by.

Many of my micro stories are inspired by prompts provided by THE FICTION DEALER Substack. I highly recommend checking it out if you’re interested in reading more microfics — or writing your own!

Legacy

Growing up, we had honeysuckle bushes in the front yard, and a creek running through the back. My siblings and I spent humid summer days feasting on nectar and wild strawberries before exploring the banks. We bathed in the red clay, playing with Eastern mud turtles and daring each other to find a cottonmouth.

At night, we chased the fireflies, catching lightning in our hands, serenaded by a discordant symphony of croaking frogs and whining cicadas.

Today, that creek is dust. The honeysuckle shriveled. The fireflies have disappeared.

Our children stay inside, never guessing the wonders that once awaited them.

Writing without a paywall is important to me, but writing is work. If you enjoyed this post or found it helpful, I would be honored if you would consider donating.
