This week's microfiction is an 80-word story about nothing.

Nothing

A man and a woman sit in darkness at the kitchen table. They trade hoarse whispers back and forth—can’t wake the kids.

The woman looks at her man. “I can’t tell you how sorry I am. I know I hurt you. What can I do?” She is earnest, eyes filled with sorrow.

He is silent for a minute, looking at the ceiling to avoid her eye.

“Nothing.” He looks, but he looks past her. “There’s nothing you can do.”

Writing without a paywall is important to me, but writing is work. If you enjoyed this post or found it helpful, I would be honored if you would consider donating.
