This week's microfiction is an 80-word story about priorities.

Counting Coins

Odel enjoyed counting his many gold coins, though “many” was never enough for him.

Twelve hundred, twelve hundred and one, twelve hundred and two…

A servant interrupted. “Lord Eldrick has come calling.”

Odel didn’t look up. Twelve hundred and twenty, twelve hundred and twenty-one…

“Will you come to our bedchamber?” asked his wife.

Fourteen hundred and seventy-seven…

When Death came, offering eternal rest, Odel declined and stayed behind. Listen well; you can still hear him count.

Sixteen hundred and forty-three…

Writing without a paywall is important to me, but writing is work. If you enjoyed this post or found it helpful, I would be honored if you would consider donating.
