This week's microfiction is a 100-word story about receiving the gift of flight.

Borrowed Sky

One spring morning, I awoke to find myself floating about a foot off my bed. I tried to stand, but my feet refused to touch the floor.

I floated out the door; others had gathered outside, some floating, some not.

It didn’t take long for us floaters to feel lofty. The non-floaters began to hate us for it. But they were stuck on the filthy ground like primitive primates, while we pushed ourselves to float higher and higher until we soared like gods.

How were we to know that the blessing would stop, and it would all come crashing down?

Writing without a paywall is important to me, but writing is work. If you enjoyed this post or found it helpful, I would be honored if you would consider donating.
