This week's microfiction is a 70-word retelling of "The Six Swans" by the Brothers Grimm.
Birds in the Sky
Child-eater, they call me. Wicked. How can I defend myself, thus choosing my life over that of my brothers, cursed to roam as swans?
Six years of silence; six shirts nearly sewn. All for naught, if I burn upon this pyre.
My eyes scream my innocence to my love, the king.
He does not hear.
My gaze averts, then—
Lo! Birds in the sky! My brothers come; I am saved.
