Introducing Monday Microfiction: "Bug Off"

Writer: Jennifer PeasleeJennifer Peaslee

I've mentioned that I wanted to start sharing my writing on Substack. I thought it would be fun to start by posting weekly microfictions.

Many (but not all) of my micro stories are inspired by prompts provided by THE FICTION DEALER Substack. I highly recommend checking it out if you're interested in reading more microfics—or writing your own!

This week's microfiction is a 100-word story about a marriage that is falling apart due to an unusual problem.

Bug Off

“In sickness and in health,” I'd pledged, but nobody said anything about staying loyal when your husband transforms into a giant ant. I could live with the mindless drone—not much different from how he was before—but for the smell. That pungent, acidic stench permeates the air wherever he crawls.

I’ve stocked up on spray, filling kitchen cabinets while he’s off scavenging for food or a queen or whatever his heart desires now that it no longer desires me.

Does he still have a heart?

Perhaps he never did.

Tonight, when he sleeps, I’ll fill the air with Raid.
