How to Format Your eBook for Publication with Reedsy

I wrote my upcoming novella Sorority Zombies in Space! on Scrivener. I really enjoy using Scriv; it has a ton of features, although there's a learning curve to finding and using all of them.

However, Scrivener costs $60 per license and isn't available on the cloud. Maybe you don't want to spend $60 on word-processing software. Or maybe you really need to be able to access your WIP from multiple computers, phones, or tablets.

In that case, I recommend using Reedsy Studio. Reedsy Studio is a great free tool to use for your eBook creation. You can plan and write your entire novel on Reedsy, or upload a completed manuscript for final formatting. Recently, I've done both.

Sorority Zombies in Space—completed manuscript

When using Reedsy Studio, you have the option to create a book or import a DOCX or ODT file.

After uploading your file, you'll probably have to correct some of the formatting.

For instance, my chapter headings didn't come through as such, so I had to manually input the chapter names. You

That was a minor annoyance. A bigger one was that I had to manually input every scene break.

But aside from that, the uploading process went smoothly!

Extreme Whore—manuscript from scratch

I guess now is as good a time as any to announce that my next book will be an extreme horror novella titled Extreme Whore. This time, I'm writing the entire thing on Reedsy Studio.

So what does the Reedsy Studio editor do for you?

  • Tracks word count and writing goals

  • Lets you pin notes for easy access

  • Tracks changes and comments

  • Saves previous versions automatically

  • Has a great "find & replace" tool

  • Spellcheck that you can turn on and off

  • Easy way to insert images and endnotes

  • FREE

  • FREE

  • FREE

I really like that it's free. Can you tell?

Exporting Your Finished Manuscript

First, Reedsy includes front and back matter templates for you to pick and choose from. There aren't a lot of options, but it's better than zero options.

Once that's done, click "Export book" and select your final formatting options.

And that's it. You get a beautifully formatted book and you get it for freeeeeeeeeee.
