Now that my debut novella, Sorority Zombies in Space!, has been released on Amazon, I figured I would do something fun and come up with some discussion questions. Because, yes, it's a book about dick-biting zombies, but it's also a critique of toxic masculinity and colonialism.

I will be entering into spoiler territory here, so make sure you read the book first! It's 150 pages, so it's a pretty quick read.

  1. The story is told from Todd's limited perspective. How might the story be affected if told from Ziffany's point of view, or Chad's? What truths might Todd be blind to about himself?

  2. Todd constantly considers what "Billy would do" or what "Chad taught him." Does Todd show any capacity for genuine change, or has his programming doomed him from the start?

  3. The book never shows Todd receiving affection or comfort from his parents. How does this absence create a void that Chad's nanostream and the "bro code" attempt to fill? Can toxic ideologies only take root in emotionally barren soil, or can they sprout within anyone?

  4. The Colony claims to offer people "everything you've ever wanted" while removing their autonomy. How is this different from—or similar to—the ideology Todd already followed?

  5. Todd's masculinity is performative; he's frequently worried about being seen as a beta or worse. Does this performative masculinity ultimately make him more or less vulnerable to the aliens' manipulation?

  6. The bros explicitly see themselves as "explorers, conquerors, and legends." What does their treatment of the alien planet suggest about historical colonialism?

  7. Chad's rhetoric about "taking what's yours" and "conquering" applies both to interpersonal relationships and to the planet itself. How does the book link personal misogyny to broader colonialism?

Writing without a paywall is important to me, but writing is work. If you enjoyed this post or found it helpful, I would be honored if you would consider donating.
