Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter is psychological horror done right. Read this book if you want to be disturbed.
Twenty years after their eldest sister Julia disappeared, estranged sisters Claire and Lydia are forced to reunite when disturbing evidence surfaces following the death of Claire's husband. As the sisters investigate, they uncover a dark conspiracy that may reveal the truth about what happened to Julia.
This book is dark and violent. It's not like non-stop violence, but the stuff that's in there is pretty twisted. It bordered on extreme horror at times, I felt. Luckily, I love extreme horror.
But what I loved most were the psychological elements. This is a book that makes you stop and think, "What if this happened to me?" at several points.
I had some minor quibbles, like leaps in logic that felt unrealistic and some uneven pacing near the end, which stopped it from being a five-star read. Nonetheless, Pretty Girls is an excellent book that I highly recommend.
Writing without a paywall is important to me, but writing is work. If you enjoyed this post or found it helpful, I would be honored if you would consider donating.
