There's this posh Englishman who occasionally comes across my Facebook Reels, whose content revolves around the correct way to speak. He doesn't solely teach grammar, but also how to avoid sounding boorish.
I'm a big fan of his videos, like this one that discusses the difference between "discreet" and "discrete."
If one were to put that man into a printing press, he would surely come out as Style & Circumstance: The Gentleperson's Guide to Good Grammar.
I started reading S&C in January, and it is a delightful read. Not only is it a wonderful style guide—thanks to it, I now know the difference between irritate and aggravate—it's also written entertainingly.
S&C covers commonly misused and misspelled words, parts of speech, verb tenses, and punctuation and style. It also covers concerns like logic, cliches, and parallelism. It advises on avoiding wordiness and eliminating repetition.
I'd say this is a reliable style guide for writers of all levels. It currently costs less than $10 and is available on Kindle Unlimited. Give it a read!
Writing without a paywall is important to me, but writing is work. If you enjoyed this post or found it helpful, I would be honored if you would consider donating.
